Discover more about Gustave Moreau Museum

The Musée Gustave Moreau, nestled in Paris's 9th arrondissement, offers an intimate glimpse into the life and art of the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. The museum is located in Moreau's former home and studio, which he transformed into a museum during his lifetime. In 1895, Moreau hired architect Albert Lafon to convert his family home into a museum. The second and third floors became large, north-facing glass-fronted studios, designed to offer as much space as possible. A majestic spiral staircase links them together. The museum's unique atmosphere stems from its unchanged museography since its opening in 1903. Visitors can explore three floors showcasing Moreau's drawings, paintings, watercolors, and sculptures. The first floor features the family apartment, offering a glimpse into Moreau's personal life with its dining room, bedroom, and library. The upper floors display Moreau's most famous works, including *Jupiter and Semele*, *The Abduction of Europa*, and *The Unicorns*. Moreau bequeathed the building and its contents to the French State in 1897, a year before his death. This ensured that his work would be preserved and displayed according to his wishes. The museum opened in 1903, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the world of a visionary artist.
