Discover more about Les Halles

Les Halles, located in the 1st arrondissement, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was established as Paris's central market. For centuries, it was the city's main source of fresh produce and goods, earning the nickname 'the belly of Paris'. Émile Zola immortalized the market in his novel 'Le Ventre de Paris,' capturing its vibrant atmosphere and the lives of the working class. In the mid-19th century, architect Victor Baltard redesigned Les Halles with innovative iron and glass pavilions, creating a more organized and airy market space. However, by the mid-20th century, the market's charm was overshadowed by overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. In 1969, the market was relocated to Rungis, a suburb near Orly Airport, leaving a void in the heart of Paris. The area underwent significant redevelopment, resulting in the Forum des Halles, a partly subterranean shopping center. Although initially unpopular, the Forum has been revamped and now includes a wide array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. Above ground, La Canopée, a futuristic glass and steel structure completed in 2016, provides a modern architectural contrast. Today, Les Halles is a vibrant district that attracts visitors with its blend of old and new. The area is home to the Saint-Eustache Church, a magnificent Gothic and Renaissance architectural gem. Nearby Rue Montorgueil offers a delightful stroll with its traditional bakeries, cheese shops, and cafes. Les Halles is also a major transportation hub, with the Châtelet-Les Halles station connecting multiple Metro and RER lines, making it easily accessible from anywhere in the city.
