Château de Maisons-Laffitte: A Baroque Masterpiece

The Château de Maisons-Laffitte, often simply called the Château de Maisons, stands as a testament to French Baroque architecture. Located in Maisons-Laffitte, a charming town just northwest of Paris, this château was designed by François Mansart, a leading architect of his time, between 1630 and 1651. Built for René de Longueil, a member of the Parlement de Paris and Superintendent of Finances to Louis XIV, the château was intended to impress. It served as a venue for welcoming King Louis XIV and other prestigious guests on their way to hunt in the nearby forests of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The architecture represents a transition from the late Renaissance style to classicism. It is considered one of the first châteaux to feature a more open design, with a central vestibule and a grand staircase. This innovative design influenced the construction of later palaces like Vaux-le-Vicomte and Versailles. Throughout its history, the château has passed through the hands of several prominent figures. It was once owned by Charles Philip, the Count of Artois and brother of Louis XVI, who made significant interior changes. During the French Revolution, the château was confiscated and sold. In 1818, it was acquired by Parisian banker Jacques Laffitte, who began developing the surrounding park into building lots. In 1905, the state purchased the château to prevent its demolition. Today, the Château de Maisons-Laffitte is open to the public as a national museum. Visitors can explore the grand interiors, including the King's apartment, the Count of Artois' dining room, and Marshal Lannes' chamber, adorned with period furniture, tapestries, and paintings. The château also hosts cultural events, such as concerts and exhibitions. The gardens, though smaller than the original 500-hectare estate, still offer a beautiful setting for a stroll.
