Discover more about Mémorial de la Shoah

Located in the heart of Paris, in the 4th arrondissement, the Mémorial de la Shoah is a poignant reminder of the Holocaust and its impact on French Jews. The memorial serves as a museum, documentation center, and place of remembrance, all dedicated to preserving and teaching the history of the Shoah. The Mémorial de la Shoah evolved from underground initiatives dating back to 1943, when efforts began to document the plight of Jews in France during the Nazi occupation. Officially opened in 2005 by President Jacques Chirac, the memorial stands on the site of the Memorial of the Unknown Jewish Martyr. The memorial encompasses several significant components. The Wall of Names lists the names of approximately 76,000 Jews who were deported from France and murdered by the Nazis. The crypt contains ashes of victims from various death camps and the Warsaw Ghetto, buried with soil from Israel. A door from the Beaune-la-Rolande internment camp serves as a somber reminder of the detention centers used in France. The Mémorial's permanent exhibition documents the history of French Jews during the Holocaust through photographs, texts, and video and audio recordings. The Jewish files, created by the Vichy government to identify Jewish citizens, are also on display. The Wall of the Righteous recognizes non-Jewish individuals who helped save Jews during the war. The Mémorial de la Shoah is not only a place of remembrance but also a center for education and research. It houses a multimedia center, a documentation center, and a bookstore, offering resources for understanding the Holocaust and its lasting impact.
