Parc de Bagatelle: A Parisian Oasis

Parc de Bagatelle, nestled within the Bois de Boulogne in Paris's 16th arrondissement, is a hidden gem offering a tranquil escape from the urban bustle. This enchanting park, one of the four botanical gardens of Paris, spans 24 hectares and is renowned for its romantic scenery and exquisite rose garden. The park's history is rooted in a bet between Marie Antoinette and her brother-in-law, the Count of Artois, in 1775. The Count wagered he could build a 'maison de plaisance' in under three months, and he won, completing the neoclassical château de Bagatelle in just 64 days. The name 'Bagatelle,' meaning a trifle, is an ironic nod to the significant cost and effort involved in creating the park and palace. Over the years, the park has evolved, with Scottish garden designer Thomas Blaikie expanding the formal gardens into a vast English-Chinese garden. In 1905, Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, the Commissioner of Gardens for the City of Paris, transformed the park into a botanical domain, adding collections of roses, irises, perennials and other flowers. Today, the rose garden boasts over 10,000 rose bushes from 1,200 different species and hosts an annual international competition for new roses. Visitors can explore various features, including the Château de Bagatelle, an English garden, a Chinese pagoda, grottoes, artificial waterfalls, and the Nymph Pond. The park also showcases collections of irises, peonies, and clematis. Wildlife, including squirrels and peacocks, adds to the park's charm. The park hosts summer events, including classical music festivals.
