Parc Montsouris: A Verdant Escape in Southern Paris

Parc Montsouris, situated in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, is a sprawling 15-hectare park offering a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Created between 1865 and 1878 under Emperor Napoleon III's urban renewal project, it stands as one of the four major parks strategically placed around Paris. Designed by Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand, the park emulates the English landscape style, featuring gently rolling hills, a picturesque lake, and diverse tree and shrub species. Originally, the site was a stone quarry, which presented a challenge for the park's construction. Alphand and his team, including architect Gabriel Davioud and horticulturist Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps, transformed the area into a green oasis with winding paths, sculptures, and various attractions. The park is home to approximately 1,400 trees, some of which are over a century old. Parc Montsouris also has a rich history. It once featured a replica of the Palais du Bardo, which housed a meteorological station until it was destroyed by fire in 1991. The park is also crossed by the Paris Meridian, marked by a stele. Today, visitors can enjoy walking, jogging, relaxing by the lake, and attending free concerts at the bandstand from May to September. The park is also near the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, an international student campus.
