Constructed between 1743 and 1754 under architect Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, the cathedral evolved from a parish church to the seat of the Diocese of Versailles.The cathedral's exterior showcases a classical facade adorned with Corinthian and Doric columns, topped by a triangular pediment with a golden cross. Two lateral towers with gilded, bulb-shaped domes flank the entrance. The interior reflects a blend of Baroque and neoclassical styles. The nave's walls are bare to highlight sculptures and moldings, while the transept's vaults display unfinished moldings. Stained glass windows, crafted in the mid-19th century, depict scenes from the life of Saint Louis. The high altar, designed by Michel-Ange Slodtz, is a marble masterpiece with intricate carvings.During the French Revolution, the cathedral was repurposed as a Temple of Abundance, suffering defacement. However, it was restored in the early 19th century and consecrated as a cathedral in 1843. Today, it remains a place of worship and a historical monument, drawing visitors with its architecture, art, and spiritual significance.
