Discover more about Grand Trianon

Commissioned by Louis XIV and constructed in 1687 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the Grand Trianon stands as an architectural gem within the Palace of Versailles complex. This French Baroque château was designed as a private retreat for the king, a place to escape the rigid court etiquette and spend time with his mistress, Madame de Montespan. Originally known as the Marble Trianon due to its pink marble exterior, the Grand Trianon replaced the earlier Porcelain Trianon. The architecture reflects Italian influences, featuring a single story, a flat roof concealed by a balustrade, and a colonnaded peristyle connecting the two wings. This peristyle opens onto the courtyard on one side and the gardens on the other, creating a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. Over the centuries, the Grand Trianon has hosted numerous historical figures, including Marie Leszczynska and Napoleon Bonaparte, each leaving their mark on the palace. Napoleon refurnished the palace in the Empire style during the First Empire period. Today, visitors can explore the lavishly decorated chambers, admire the period furniture, and wander through the meticulously maintained gardens. The Mirror Room, with its stunning views of the Grand Canal, is a highlight.
