Discover more about Le lac des Perches

Lac des Perches, a captivating glacial lake in the Haut-Rhin department of France, sits at an elevation of 984 meters on the Alsatian side of the Vosges Mountains. The lake's German name, Sternsee, meaning 'Lake of the Star,' reflects its serene beauty. The French name arose from a misinterpretation of the local dialect term 'Lac des Bers,' referring to mountain pastures. In the 16th century, the lake was dammed to provide power to local forges and textile mills, shaping its history and integration with the region's industrial past. The lake supplied water to these industries until 1960. Today, Lac des Perches is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The lake is accessible only by foot, ensuring a peaceful and immersive experience in nature. Several hiking trails, catering to various skill levels, lead to the lake and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The '3 lakes circuit' is a popular option, also taking in the nearby Neuweiher lakes. Fishing is permitted in the lake, though swimming is not advised.
