    Sapara Monastery, located 11 kilometers from Akhaltsikhe, is a captivating journey into Georgia's medieval past. Founded no later than the 9th century, this Orthodox monastic complex was once the esteemed residence of the Jakeli family, who significantly influenced the Samtskhe region. The monastery's remote location, hidden in the forest, contributed to its preservation over the centuries, even during Ottoman rule. The monastery complex includes several structures, showcasing Georgian architecture from the 10th to 14th centuries. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating back to the 10th century, stands as the oldest building in the complex. The largest and most prominent structure is St. Saba's Church, built in the 13th-14th centuries, adorned with intricate carvings and remarkable frescoes depicting biblical scenes and historical figures. Commissioned by Beka I Jakeli and crafted by architect Parezasdze, St. Saba's Church is considered one of the most architecturally significant churches of its time. Visitors can explore smaller chapels, a bell tower, and the ruins of the Jakeli family's palace and defensive walls.
