4.5

Gori Fortress, known locally as Goristsikhe, stands as a powerful reminder of Georgia's long and often turbulent history. Located in the heart of Gori, the fortress has been a strategic point for centuries, with archeological evidence suggesting a fortified presence since as early as the 5th-4th centuries BCE. Written records first mention the fortress in the 13th century. Possession of Gori Fortress meant control over the Shida Kartli region, leading to constant battles between Georgians, Ottomans, Persians, and Mongols. The fortress was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, with significant renovations occurring in 1642 by King Rostom of Kartli and again in 1774 by King Erekle II. The structure you see today largely reflects the 1775 reconstruction overseen by King Erekle II, incorporating elements from 16th-century designs. In the 19th century, the Russian army used the fortress before it gradually lost its strategic importance. The earthquake of 1920 caused significant damage. Today, the fortress is an Immovable Cultural Monument of National Significance, offering visitors a chance to explore its historic walls and enjoy panoramic views of Gori and the surrounding landscape. The most intact section is the western arm, Tskhra-Kara (Nine-Gates). Visitors can also see the ruins of a small church and remnants of a tunnel that once provided water.
