Jvari Pass, also known as Cross Pass, is a breathtaking mountain pass located in the central part of the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. Situated at an impressive elevation of 2,379 meters (7,857 feet) above sea level, it marks the highest point on the historic Georgian Military Road connecting Tbilisi with Vladikavkaz. This pass has been a vital route for trade, cultural exchange, and military operations since ancient times. It served as a crucial link for caravans traveling between Europe and Asia and played a pivotal role during World War II for mobilizing troops and supplies. The name 'Jvari' is derived from a storied cross of red stone, initially installed by King David the Builder and later replaced by General Alexei Yermolov in 1824. Today, Jvari Pass offers panoramic views of verdant valleys and snow-capped peaks. The surrounding area boasts unique flora and fauna, including rare alpine plants and diverse bird species. The pass is also known for its geological significance, as part of the Greater Caucasus mountain range, which is still tectonically active.
