Discover more about Gremi's Archangels' Complex

Gremi Archangels' Complex, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is a remarkable testament to the country's rich history and architectural prowess. Founded in 1565 by King Levan of Kakheti, Gremi served as the kingdom's capital in the 16th and 17th centuries. The complex stands on a high hill, overlooking the Alazani Valley, offering strategic views of the surrounding landscape. The complex comprises the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, a three-story palace-bell tower, and defensive walls. The Church of the Archangels, constructed in a cross-domed style, showcases a blend of Georgian and Persian architectural influences. Its interior is adorned with 16th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes and portraits of historical figures, including King Levan and his wife, Queen Tinatin. The palace-bell tower houses a museum displaying archaeological artifacts and exhibits related to the town's history. Gremi was a vibrant trading town on the Silk Road, connecting Europe and Asia. However, in 1615, the armies of Shah Abbas I of Persia razed the town, and it never fully recovered. The capital was later moved to Telavi. Today, Gremi is a museum-preserve, attracting visitors with its historical significance and architectural beauty. Visitors can explore the church, climb the bell tower for panoramic views, and wander through the ruins of the once-flourishing town.
