Giant Plane Tree: A Living Monument in Telavi

Nestled in the heart of Telavi, in the Kakheti region of Georgia, the Giant Plane Tree is more than just a tree; it's a living symbol of the city's history and resilience. Known locally as Chadari, this natural marvel has stood for centuries, witnessing the ebb and flow of Georgian history. Estimates of its age vary, but most place it between 700 and 900 years old. Towering at 46 meters with a trunk measuring 3.6 meters in diameter (12 meters in circumference), the Giant Plane Tree is a sight to behold. Its massive trunk and sprawling branches create a canopy that provides shade and a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. The tree is located in the heart of the city, across from the Batonis Tsikhe Fortress. Legend has it that famous Georgian poets and writers gathered under its branches, and King Erekle II of Kakheti used to sit in its shade while making important decisions. According to local lore, if a group of people holds hands and encircles the tree while making a wish, that wish is destined to come true. In recent years, the tree has undergone rehabilitation to ensure its survival, with specialists from Germany contributing to its care. Just steps away from the tree, visitors can also find the Mechanical Snails, a unique street art installation crafted from recycled materials.
