Discover more about Gremi's Archangels' Complex

Gremi Archangels' Complex, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is a remarkable 16th-century architectural monument. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti, it stands as a testament to Georgia's rich history and cultural heritage. Founded by King Levan of Kakheti in 1565, Gremi functioned as a lively trading town on the Silk Road and a royal residence. In 1615, the armies of Shah Abbas I of Persia razed the town, and it never fully recovered. The kings of Kakheti eventually moved their capital to Telavi. The complex consists of the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, a three-story castle, and a bell tower. The church, constructed in 1565 and frescoed by 1577, is a cruciform domed structure built of stone. Inside, visitors can see portraits of King Levan, his wife Queen Tinatin, and their son on the south wall. The bell tower houses a museum displaying archaeological artifacts and a 16th-century cannon. Visitors can explore the castle's three floors and enjoy panoramic views of the Alazani Valley. The complex also features remains of a secret tunnel leading to the Intsobi River, a wine cellar, and other structures.
