Discover more about Zoological center Bears sanctuary

Nestled in the hills of Tskhvarichamia, the Zoological Center Bears Sanctuary provides a vital refuge for bears and other wildlife. This animal protection organization focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating bears, ensuring they live in a nurturing environment. The sanctuary houses various bear species, allowing visitors to witness these creatures up close while learning about their behaviors and the challenges they face. The sanctuary was founded in 2010 by Soso Jikurishvili, who initially cared for a bear cub named Balu after its mother was killed. Unable to find a zoo to take the cub, he started the sanctuary to care for Balu and other bears in need, including those illegally kept in captivity. The sanctuary spans 5,000 square meters and is divided into three sections to house bears of different ages. Many of the bears have been neutered to prevent breeding in captivity. Visitors can enjoy guided tours that provide insights into the sanctuary's mission and the work of the staff. Educational programs highlight the importance of wildlife conservation, emphasizing the need to protect animals from poaching and habitat destruction. The sanctuary is open daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
