Discover more about Möschebrunnen, Aachen - Bonifatius Stirnberg (1978)

The Möschebrunnen, affectionately known as the Sparrow Fountain, graces Aachen's Münsterplatz with its whimsical charm. Created in 1978 by the Freiohl sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg, the bronze fountain depicts a flock of sparrows, called "Mösche" in the local Öcher Platt dialect. The fountain stands on what was once the Singvogelmarkt, or singing bird market, a place where birds were traded. Stirnberg, a prolific artist with numerous works throughout Aachen, designed the Möschebrunnen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Derichs & Konertz construction company. The fountain features a spherical structure adorned with 12 bronze sparrows perched on top. Pressing a button activates the flow of fresh drinking water, offering respite to locals and tourists alike. The Möschebrunnen is more than just a pretty fountain; it's a symbol of Aachen's history and culture. It's one of the few remaining drinking water fountains in the city center, making it a practical and popular spot, especially during the warmer months. The fountain provides a gathering place where people can relax, chat, and appreciate the artistry and history surrounding them.
