Geroldsauer Wasserfall Travel Guide

The Geroldsau Waterfall (Geroldsauer Wasserfall) is located in the Grobbach Valley, south of the Geroldsau district in Baden-Baden. The waterfall is approximately six meters in height, formed by the Grobbach stream cascading over a step of Bühlertal granite, a geological feature created by tectonic events. The waterfall and its surrounding area have been designated as a protected natural geological monument, highlighting its significance and rarity.Historically, the waterfall was known as 'Große Bütte,' an old German term for 'tub,' referencing the pool-like deepening at the base of the falls. The popularity of the Geroldsau Waterfall grew in the 1820s, spurred by travel guides that highlighted its scenic beauty. By the mid-19th century, paths were improved and bridges constructed to enhance the visitor experience.The Grobbach stream originates on the western slopes of the northern Black Forest. As it flows northward, it merges with the Harzbach before reaching the waterfall. The average flow rate at the falls is approximately 0.56 m³/s. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a narrow, V-shaped valley that broadens into the valley bottom of Geroldsau.The area around the Geroldsau Waterfall is known for its natural beauty. In May and June, the rhododendrons are in bloom. There are several hiking trails around the waterfall.
