Historically, the waterfall was known as 'Große Bütte,' an old German term for 'tub,' referencing the pool-like deepening at the base of the falls. By the mid-19th century, paths were improved and bridges constructed to enhance the visitor experience. The Grobbach stream originates on the western slopes of the northern Black Forest.
