Discover more about Leuchtturm Friedrichsort

Leuchtturm Friedrichsort, located in the Pries-Friedrichsort district of Kiel, marks the narrowest point of the Kiel Fjord. A beacon has been present at this location since 1815, starting as a wooden structure before evolving into the current concrete lighthouse. The original wooden light barge was erected in 1807 but only went into operation in 1815. It was replaced by an iron light barge in 1853, which was destroyed by ice in 1863/64. In 1866, the first brick lighthouse was constructed, and it was replaced by the current, taller structure in 1971 to meet the demands of increasing maritime traffic. The current lighthouse is a 31.7-meter-high, round, steel-reinforced concrete tower, painted in green and white. It acts as a crucial navigational aid, equipped with a range of 7 nautical miles for white light, 6 nautical miles for green light and 5 nautical miles for red light. The lighthouse also features a fog signal system and equipment for monitoring water levels. The structure is remotely controlled from the traffic control center in Travemünde. Today, the Leuchtturm Friedrichsort is not only a functional lighthouse but also a cultural landmark. The island on which it stands and the lighthouse itself are listed as protected cultural monuments of the city of Kiel. While the lighthouse is not open for public tours, it offers scenic views of the Baltic Sea and the ships passing through the Kiel Fjord. The surrounding Falckensteiner Strand is a popular spot for walks and enjoying the maritime atmosphere.
