Discover more about Hochschachten

Hochschachten, nestled within the Bavarian Forest National Park, presents a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical land use. These 'Schachten' are former mountain meadows, once cleared for cattle grazing, that now stand as island-like clearings within the dense forest. The area is defined by its very old, gnarled trees, interspersed with flora like wolf's bane and mat grass, creating a unique and diversified habitat. The Großer Schachten, as Hochschachten is also known, spans approximately 9.5 hectares. The landscape provides refuge for numerous insect, bird, reptile, and bat species, some of which are quite rare. In 2018, red cattle grazed here for the first time in a long while, reminiscent of the area's past. Hiking through Hochschachten offers an immersive experience in nature. The trails wind through the open meadows and wooded sections, providing panoramic views and a chance to observe the unique flora and fauna. The interplay of light and shadow, the twisted forms of the ancient trees, and the calls of birds create a special atmosphere. Hochschachten is particularly enchanting in misty or slightly foggy weather, adding an ethereal quality to the already surreal landscape.
