The square was established in 1737 as an exercise ground during the expansion of Friedrichstadt and was officially named in 1849 to honor Hans Joachim von Zieten, a Prussian General. Originally, Zietenplatz and the adjacent Wilhelmplatz formed a double square. Over time, the area faced significant destruction during World War II, with both squares being nearly obliterated due to their proximity to the Reich Chancellery. During the era of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Zietenplatz was absorbed into Mohrenstrasse in 1968 and used as a parking area. In the summer of 2007, Zietenplatz was restored to its historical design and reopened to the public. Today, the square features six monuments with statues of high-ranking Prussian military leaders, including Zieten himself. These statues serve as a reminder of German military history, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate the area's cultural richness.
