Marktplatz, located in the heart of Düsseldorf's Altstadt, is more than just a square; it's a living testament to the city's rich and dynamic history. First documented in 1392, this central space has evolved from a bustling medieval marketplace to a vibrant hub for cultural events, public gatherings, and everyday life. Dominating the square's western and northern sides is the impressive Rathaus, a complex of buildings showcasing a blend of architectural styles, primarily Baroque and Neo-Renaissance. Originally constructed in 1570, the Rathaus has been expanded and modified over the centuries, reflecting Düsseldorf's growth and prosperity. Its intricate facade and clock tower, adorned with Rococo details added in the 18th century, are prime examples of the city's artistic heritage. In the center of Marktplatz stands the iconic equestrian statue of Jan Wellem II, also known as Johann Wilhelm II, Elector Palatine.
