Overview
The Bläserbrunnen, nestled in the heart of Dortmund's Alter Markt, is more than just a fountain; it's a symbol of the city's resilience, history, and enduring spirit. This delightful landmark, whose name translates to 'Wind Players' Fountain' in English, has been a central gathering place for locals and a charming attraction for tourists for over a century. Originally constructed in 1901, the Bläserbrunnen was commissioned to beautify and enhance the market square, coinciding with renovations to the Old Town Hall and the planned construction of the Municipal Savings Bank and the Wilhelm and Auguste Viktoria Library. City building councilor Kullrich tasked Regierungsbauführer Paul Drescher with designing a market fountain that would also serve as a watering trough for animals, a common feature in market squares of the time. Karl Buchholtz, a Dortmund pensioner, contributed 13,000 marks to the project. Drescher's design featured an octagonal basin with a central column, reminiscent of market fountains found in southern German cities. However, the fountain's most distinctive feature was the bronze figure of a horn player, sculpted by Gerhard (Adolf) Janensch. This jovial musician, dressed in traditional shepherd's garb, is depicted humorously emptying the saliva from his horn. Some accounts suggest that water may have once flowed from the horn, adding to the fountain's playful character. The horn player was intended to evoke the image of traveling musicians from the Middle Ages, adding a touch of whimsy and historical context to the square. Interestingly, some have noted a resemblance between the horn player and Dortmund concertmaster Hüttner, suggesting that the sculpture may have been a lighthearted caricature of the musician. Regardless of its inspiration, the Bläserbrunnen quickly became a beloved fixture of the Alter Markt. During World War II, the original fountain basin was destroyed, and in 1955, the remnants were removed and stored. However, the bronze figure of the horn player survived the war unscathed, finding temporary refuge in the Museum of Arts and Crafts. Following the war, there was considerable public demand for the fountain's restoration. In 1964, the Bläserbrunnen was re-erected, albeit in a slightly different location on the Alter Markt, shifted towards the northeast. Today, the Bläserbrunnen stands as a testament to Dortmund's ability to rebuild and preserve its cultural heritage. The Alter Markt itself has been the city's marketplace for almost 900 years and continues to be a vibrant social hub. In warm weather, the square transforms into a giant beer garden, with outdoor seating from numerous bars and cafes spilling onto the plaza. The Bläserbrunnen provides a picturesque backdrop to this lively scene, its gentle sounds of flowing water offering a moment of tranquility amidst the bustling city center. The fountain's location in the Alter Markt places it within easy reach of other notable Dortmund attractions. The Reinoldikirche, Dortmund's oldest church, is just a short walk away, as is the Westenhellweg, one of Germany's busiest shopping streets. The Dortmunder U, a former brewery turned cultural center, is also nearby, housing the Museum Ostwall and offering stunning views of the city. For visitors to Dortmund, the Bläserbrunnen is more than just a photo opportunity; it's a chance to connect with the city's history and experience its vibrant atmosphere. Whether you're admiring the whimsical sculpture, enjoying a coffee at a nearby cafe, or simply soaking in the ambiance of the Alter Markt, the Bläserbrunnen offers a delightful glimpse into the heart and soul of Dortmund. The area around the Bläserbrunnen is also known for hosting various events and festivals throughout the year, adding to its appeal as a community gathering place. From Christmas markets to open-air concerts, the Alter Markt is a stage for Dortmund's cultural life, with the Bläserbrunnen serving as a charming centerpiece. Accessibility is generally good in the city center, with lowered curbs and pedestrian-friendly routes. However, some areas may have cobblestone streets, which could pose a challenge for those with mobility issues. Public transportation is readily available, with the Reinoldikirche U-Bahn station providing easy access to the Alter Markt. In conclusion, the Bläserbrunnen is an essential stop for any visitor to Dortmund. Its historical significance, artistic charm, and central location make it a true landmark of the city. It embodies Dortmund's blend of tradition and modernity, offering a welcoming space for locals and tourists alike to gather, relax, and appreciate the city's unique character.
