Walking
Start from the center of Wa, specifically at the Wa Market. Head south on the main road (N12) towards the Wa Polytechnic. After about 1.5 kilometers, look for the signpost indicating the turnoff to Pisie. Take a left onto the road towards Pisie and continue walking for approximately 8 kilometers. This road will lead you directly to the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary. It’s advisable to ask locals for directions along the way, as they can provide additional guidance and ensure you stay on the right path.
Bicycle
Rent a bicycle from a local shop in Wa and start from the Wa Market. Cycle south on the main road (N12) for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the Wa Polytechnic. At the polytechnic, turn left onto the road that leads to Pisie. Continue cycling straight for around 8 kilometers. Follow the signs along the way, and don’t hesitate to ask local residents for directions, as they are familiar with the area and can assist you in reaching the sanctuary.
Public Transport (Tro-Tro)
From the Wa bus station, look for a tro-tro heading towards Pisie. Tro-tros are shared minibuses that are a common form of transport. Board one of these tro-tros and inform the driver you want to go to the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary or Pisie. The ride will take approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive in Pisie, you may need to walk about 2 kilometers to reach the entrance of the sanctuary. It’s helpful to ask the driver or locals for the best drop-off point to minimize your walking distance.
