Discover more about Saint Bernard's Hospital

St Bernard's Hospital is the primary healthcare provider in Gibraltar, offering a comprehensive range of medical services to the local population and visitors. The hospital's history dates back to 1567 when Juan Mateos, a retired innkeeper, converted his house into a 20-bed hospital to treat locals and sailors. In 1591, he transferred the hospital to the Order of Saint John of God. By 1691, it was known as the Hospital de San Juan de Dios, serving as an isolation hospital. After the Anglo-Dutch capture of Gibraltar in 1704, the British authorities took over the hospital and used it as a military hospital. It was rebuilt in 1815 as a civil hospital for the local population under the then Governor of Gibraltar Sir George Don. The hospital was rebuilt again in 1882, and the elegant façade can still be seen, partly obscured by extensions, including the King George VI Wing in the 1950s and the Mackintosh Wing in the 1970s. In 2005, St Bernard's Hospital moved to its new, modern home in Europort, ending over four centuries of history at the original site. The hospital provides various services, including emergency care. Visiting hours are limited and at the discretion of the Ward Manager. Visitors may be required to provide proof of vaccination or a recent PCR test.Today, St Bernard's Hospital continues to serve as a vital institution in Gibraltar, providing healthcare services to the community.
