Discover more about Shrine of our Lady of Europe

Perched at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe is a site of profound historical and religious significance. Originally a mosque, it was transformed into a Christian shrine in 1462 when King Ferdinand IV of Castile captured Gibraltar from the Moors. He dedicated the entire continent of Europe to the Mother of God. Inside, the shrine houses a revered statue of the Virgin and Child, a symbol of hope and community. The statue, only two feet tall, is made of wood and features red, blue, and gold paint. The Virgin sits with the Child Jesus on her lap, holding a scepter adorned with three flowers representing Love, Truth, and Justice. The marble altar was donated by Pope Pius IX. Over the centuries, the shrine has been plundered and repurposed, even serving as a storehouse. Despite this, devotion to Our Lady of Europe has persisted, with a revival beginning in the 1960s. In 1979, Pope John Paul II officially recognized Our Lady of Europe as the Patroness of Gibraltar. In 2009, the shrine received the Golden Rose from Pope Benedict XVI. Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe welcomes visitors of all faiths to experience its serene atmosphere and learn about its rich history.
