Discover more about Charles V Wall

The Charles V Wall, originally called Muralla de San Benito, is a significant historical landmark in Gibraltar, constructed in 1540 and strengthened in 1552 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. This formidable wall was designed to bolster Gibraltar's defenses against naval attacks, particularly from Barbary pirates. In September 1540, Turkish pirates attacked and looted the town, taking captives. The wall was built to prevent future attacks. Giovanni Battista Calvi, an Italian military engineer, improved the wall around 1552, designing it to run from the coast to a precipice, then zigzag up to the Rock's crest. Later, Philip II commissioned further improvements. The wall stretches from South Bastion to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. Visitors can walk along the well-preserved wall, taking in breathtaking views of the Rock of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. The wall is equipped with a handrail for safety. The Charles V Wall stands as a testament to Gibraltar's enduring legacy and strategic importance.
