Discover more about Governor's Lookout Battery

Perched on the northern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, the Governor's Lookout Battery is a testament to the territory's strategic military history. Initially used as an observation post by the Governor of Gibraltar, General George Augustus Eliott, during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, it provided a commanding view of the Bay of Gibraltar and Spain. In the late 19th century, the battery was armed with a single 9-inch rifled muzzle-loading gun. By the early 20th century, it was upgraded to a 9.2-inch breech-loading gun, capable of engaging targets on land and at sea. The battery's underground works included a magazine, cartridge store, and shelters for the crew and officers. The last gun was removed in 1940 during World War II. Today, the Governor's Lookout Battery is a historical landmark within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Visitors can explore the remnants of the fortifications and enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Spanish coastline. The site is currently used as a Scout camp.
