It commemorates the location where, according to local lore, Admiral Lord Nelson's body was brought ashore from HMS Victory following the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Legend has it that his body was preserved in a barrel of rum (or spirit of wine) for the journey back to England. The focal point of Nelson's Anchorage is the impressive 100-ton gun, a Victorian-era supergun that stands as a testament to British engineering and military might. Named after Baron Napier of Magdala, the battery was constructed between 1878 and 1884 to house this massive weapon, intended to protect the entrances to the commercial harbor and the Royal Naval Dockyard in Rosia Bay. The gun, manufactured by Sir W.C. Armstrong in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was nicknamed 'The Rockbuster'. It was one of four originally made, with two being commissioned for Gibraltar and two for Malta, to defend against long-range bombardment. Although never fired in anger, the 100-ton gun remains a fascinating monument to Victorian artillery and technology.Visitors to Nelson's Anchorage can explore the historic site, take in the panoramic views of Rosia Bay, and learn about Gibraltar's strategic importance throughout history.
