Discover more about North Bastion

The North Bastion, historically known as Baluarte San Pablo (St. Paul's Bastion), is an integral part of Gibraltar's fortifications, situated at the northern end of the peninsula. Its primary function was to defend the town from potential attacks originating from mainland Spain. The bastion's foundations are rooted in the older Giralda tower, which dates back to 1309.Over the centuries, the North Bastion has undergone several transformations, reflecting the changing military strategies and architectural styles of its rulers. Originally constructed by the Spanish, the British further fortified it after capturing Gibraltar in 1704. They strategically flooded the land in front of the bastion and transformed the curtain wall into the Grand Battery, enhancing its defensive capabilities.Today, the North Bastion is surrounded by reclaimed land to the west and north. Glacis Road runs along the base of the bastion's former glacis, while Smith Dorrien Avenue separates it from the still largely intact curtain wall. The site is currently occupied by the Giralda Gardens and a pétanque club. The Government of Gibraltar has plans to rehabilitate the site as part of a broader initiative to develop the old fortifications into tourist attractions.Visitors to the North Bastion can explore its well-preserved structure, which exemplifies the military architecture of the time. Informative plaques and displays narrate the history of Gibraltar's strategic importance in naval warfare. The bastion also offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Rock of Gibraltar.
