Discover more about South Bastion

South Bastion is a significant historical landmark in Gibraltar, serving as a reminder of the territory's rich military past. Originally constructed around 1540 by Spanish engineers, it formed a crucial part of Gibraltar's fortifications, protecting the western base of the Charles V Wall. The bastion was strategically positioned at the south end of the Line Wall Curtain, defending the town from attacks from the Bay of Gibraltar.Over the centuries, the British further improved the bastion, recognizing its importance in defending Gibraltar. The South Bastion, known as Baluarte de Nuestra Señora del Rosario by the Spanish, featured casemated gun positions that enfiladed the ditch across the Gate of Africa, now the Southport Gate. Together with the Flat Bastion, it guarded the Southport Gate.Today, the South Bastion houses the Gibraltar College. A statue of Horatio Nelson stands near the bastion's wall, commemorating his victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar. Visitors can explore the historic site, walk along the ramparts, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding waters and the African coastline.
