Discover more about Princess Caroline's Battery

Princess Caroline's Battery, located at the northern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, is a testament to Gibraltar's long and storied military past. Constructed in 1732 and named after Princess Caroline, daughter of King George II, the battery played a crucial role in defending Gibraltar. Over the centuries, the battery has been updated to keep pace with evolving military technology. In 1905, it was refurbished to accommodate a 6-inch Mark VII gun. Although the battery is no longer in active service, its underground magazine has been transformed into the Military Heritage Centre, which houses the Memorial Chamber. Visitors to the Military Heritage Centre can explore a collection of relics dating from the 18th century to the present day. Exhibits include weapons, shells, and other artifacts that tell the story of Gibraltar's strategic importance. The Memorial Chamber pays tribute to the various regiments that have been deployed to Gibraltar since the early 18th century, with a comprehensive roll call on display. Princess Caroline's Battery is a listed site with the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.
