Moorish Castle: A Gibraltar Icon

The Moorish Castle in Gibraltar is a historic fortification with origins dating back to the 8th century, when the Moors ruled the region. While the exact date of its initial construction remains unknown, historical records indicate that around 1068, the Governor of Algeciras ordered the construction of a fort on Jebel Tarik (Gibraltar) to guard the area. The castle played a crucial role in the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, leading to Islamic domination in parts of Europe for over seven centuries.Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous expansions and modifications under various ruling powers, incorporating Moorish, Spanish, and European architectural styles. The most prominent features of the castle include the Tower of Homage, the Gate House, and fortified walls. The Tower of Homage, rebuilt in the 14th century, stands as the highest tower from the Islamic period in the Iberian Peninsula.Throughout its history, the Moorish Castle has served various purposes, including a defensive stronghold, a military prison, and a lookout station. In 1540, it provided safety to hundreds of people during an attack by Turkish pirates. The castle remained a prison until 2010.
