Discover more about Gibraltar Hindu Temple

Nestled on Engineer Lane in Gibraltar, the Gibraltar Hindu Temple, or Gibraltar Mandir, stands as a beacon of faith for the territory's Hindu community. Inaugurated in 2000, the temple serves as the primary spiritual center for Hindus in Gibraltar, who constitute approximately 2% of the population. Most of the Hindus in Gibraltar are of Sindhi origin. The temple's story is intertwined with the history of the Hindu community in Gibraltar. The first Hindus arrived in Gibraltar around 1870, following the opening of the Suez Canal, establishing businesses and contributing to the local economy. Over the years, the community grew, and in 1993, they began using the current site as a temple. The temple was officially opened on March 1, 2000, by the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir Richard Luce. The temple is dedicated to Rama, along with his consort Sita, his brother Lakshmana, and Hanuman. The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Vishnu-Lakshmi, Jhulelal (the ista-devata of the Sindhi people), Shiva-Parvati with Ganesha, and Radha-Krishna. Statues of Guru Nanak, Durga, and Sai Baba of Shirdi are also present. Daily aarti is performed at 7:30 pm. The temple is a hub for community activities, including Sathya Sai Baba satsangs and mantra chanting. The temple plays a vital role in preserving and promoting Hindu culture in Gibraltar. It is a focal point for festivals like Diwali, where the community gathers for prayers, celebrations, and a shared meal. The temple not only provides a place of worship but also stands as a testament to the integration and contributions of the Hindu community to Gibraltarian society.
