Overview

Wellington Front, located in Gibraltar, is a significant historical site with roots stretching back to the Moorish period. The current structure was built in 1840, named in honor of the Duke of Wellington. Major-General John Thomas Jones proposed the reinforcement of the fortifications on this site, and following a redesign in 1845, the Front was reconstructed.Constructed by convict labor, Wellington Front formed part of the Line Wall Curtain, strengthening the city's defenses. It addressed weaknesses in the original Moorish wall, providing better protection against bombardment. During World War I, it served as the headquarters for the Gibraltar Defence Force. Over time, Wellington Front has been adapted for various uses, including housing the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation and the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.Today, Wellington Front is a popular tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and a glimpse into Gibraltar's rich history. Visitors can explore the area on foot, taking in the monuments and plaques that highlight key moments in Gibraltar's past. The promenade provides a relaxing walk with scenic views, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.
