Discover more about Grand Casemates Square

Grand Casemates Square, colloquially known as Casemates Square, serves as the vibrant heart of Gibraltar, blending rich history with a lively, modern atmosphere. The square's origins trace back to Gibraltar's Moorish period, with fortifications existing on the site as early as 1160. Originally a beach where the Moors landed to establish a settlement, it later became part of the Spanish town of Villa Vieja. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the British constructed fortress walls and battlements, including the Grand Casemates barracks completed in 1817, from which the square derives its name. The square was once a site for military parades and even public executions, the last of which occurred in 1864. Today, Grand Casemates Square is a commercial and social hub, lined with numerous pubs, bars, restaurants, and shops. Refurbished in the 1990s, it replaced a former car park and now hosts various cultural events, including live concerts, National Day celebrations, and New Year's Eve parties. The square also features historical monuments, such as the Koehler depression gun carriage and a statue commemorating the Gibraltar Regiment. The foundations of a 14th-century galley house, discovered during excavations, are preserved and on display.
