Discover more about Devil's Gap Battery

Nestled within Gibraltar's scenic landscape, Devil's Gap Battery is a captivating historical site that transports visitors back to the era of military fortifications. Constructed in the late 19th century, the battery was a key component of British defenses on the Rock of Gibraltar. Today, it draws tourists eager to explore its history and enjoy breathtaking views. As you ascend to the battery, you're greeted by panoramic vistas of the rugged terrain and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The well-preserved battery features gun emplacements and historical artifacts that tell the story of Gibraltar's strategic importance. Walking paths guide you through the site, making it accessible for all visitors. Devil's Gap Battery, called Punta del Diablo by the Spanish, stands at 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), it mounted at least one mortar. In 1878, two RML 9-inch 12-ton guns were installed, but later removed in 1900. In 1902, two BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns were installed, one of which sank a German submarine in 1917 during World War I. The guns were manned again in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The battery ceased its close defense examination role in 1954 but the 6-inch guns remain in place. The battery is maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and is a Class A listed building. Recent plans aim to enhance the visitor experience with improved facilities and interpretive displays.
