The Northern Defences in Gibraltar, also known as 'The Jungle', are a network of military fortifications dating back to the 18th century, expanded through the World War II era. Walking
From Casemates Square, head south on Main Street. After a short walk, turn left onto Engineer Lane, which slopes uphill. Continue until you reach 'Piece of Cake' on your right, then turn left. Take the stairs attached to the building at the top of the road, leading to the Gibraltar escalator. The Northern Defences are a short walk from the top of the escalator.
Public Transport
From the Gibraltar International Airport or the city center, take bus route 2 or 3 towards the Moorish Castle. Disembark at the 'Moorish Castle' bus stop. From there, walk uphill along Moorish Castle Estate road for approximately 10 minutes to reach the Northern Defences. A single bus fare is approximately £2.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available throughout Gibraltar, including at the airport, border, and Grand Casemates Square. A taxi from the airport or city center to the Northern Defences will cost approximately £5-£10. Ask the driver to take you to the Moorish Castle Estate, where the Northern Defences are located.
