Unveiled in 1994, the monument commemorates the formation of the Company of Royal Artificers in 1772, the first body of soldiers of the Corps. The bronze statue depicts an 18th-century artificer and recognizes the Royal Engineers' vital role in shaping Gibraltar's infrastructure and defense systems. The Royal Engineers have a long history with Gibraltar; in 1772, a unit of 68 military engineers was formed to enhance Gibraltar's fortifications. One of their most significant accomplishments was constructing the King's Bastion. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779 – 1783), they tunneled through the Rock of Gibraltar, enabling cannons to better defend against advancing Spanish troops. In 1787, they were granted the Royal designation and became the Corps of Royal Engineers. Located on Main Street, the monument is easily accessible and provides an excellent vantage point for photographs, allowing tourists to capture the essence of this historical landmark against the backdrop of Gibraltar's cityscape.
