    Discover more about Trafalgar Cemetery

Trafalgar Cemetery, originally known as Southport Ditch Cemetery, offers a poignant glimpse into Gibraltar's naval past. Consecrated in 1798, seven years before the famed Battle of Trafalgar, the cemetery primarily serves as the final resting place for those who perished from disease and wounds sustained in various naval engagements around the area. Despite its name, only two individuals who died of wounds from the Battle of Trafalgar are buried here.Located just south of the city walls, the cemetery provides a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Visitors can explore the grounds, observing headstones transferred from St. Jago's Cemetery and Alameda Gardens, some dating back to the 1730s. These transfers occurred after the Trafalgar Cemetery fell into disuse, a century after its last burial. The cemetery was restored in the 1980s, and a memorial to the Battle of Trafalgar was erected in 1992.Among those interred are victims of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, including casualties from the First Battle of Algeciras in 1801, and conflicts off Cádiz and Málaga in 1810 and 1812 respectively. Many also succumbed to the yellow fever epidemics that struck Gibraltar between 1804 and 1814. Today, the cemetery is maintained by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and Greenarc, and it hosts an annual commemorative ceremony on the Sunday nearest to Trafalgar Day.
