Rupite: A Sanctuary of Prophecy and Nature

Rupite, a protected area in southwestern Bulgaria, offers a compelling mix of natural phenomena and spiritual intrigue. Situated at the eastern foot of the extinct Kozhuh volcano, about 10 km northeast of Petrich and 2 km from the village of Rupite, this area is renowned for its hot mineral springs, unique landscape, and connection to the famous Bulgarian prophetess, Baba Vanga.The landscape is dominated by the Kozhuh hill, a relatively small (281m) but prominent eminence formed from volcanic rock. The area's thermal springs boast a temperature of 74°C and a capacity of up to 35 liters per second, known for their therapeutic properties. The climate here is transitional, with mild winters and hot summers, contributing to the region's biodiversity. Rupite is home to various snake species and numerous bird species, making it an important spot for bird migration.Rupite's fame is largely tied to Vangeliya Gushterova, known as Baba Vanga, who lived in the area for the last years of her life. She believed Rupite was a source of energy and drew strength from it. The memorial temple “St. Petka of Bulgaria”, built in 1994 with funds provided by Vanga, is a major attraction, featuring unconventional frescoes by the artist Svetlin Rusev. The church and Vanga's house attract thousands of pilgrims and tourists.Historical context adds another layer to Rupite's appeal. The remains of the ancient town of Heraclea Sintica, the main town of the Thracian tribe Sints, are located at the foot of the Kozhuh hill. This town existed from the 4th century BC to the 6th century AD.Today, Rupite is a landscaped park area with inns, cafes, and shops. Visitors can explore the church, Baba Vanga's house, and the hot springs.
