The Lighthouse of Chania, also known as the Egyptian Lighthouse, is one of the oldest lighthouses in the world and a defining symbol of Chania's Venetian harbor. Constructed by the Venetians between 1595 and 1601, it served as a crucial navigational aid and a defensive structure. During the Ottoman occupation, the lighthouse fell into disrepair. The lighthouse's unique design features an octagonal base, a hexagonal middle section, and a circular top, reminiscent of a minaret. Standing at 21 meters (69 feet) tall, with a focal height of 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the harbor, the city, and the White Mountains.
