The name Sabbionara, meaning "of the sands," reflects its construction on underwater sand and rocks. Ironically, it failed to prevent the Turks from capturing Crete in 1669.Over the centuries, the bastion has undergone several transformations. The Turks rebuilt it after destroying it in 1645 and called it Koum Kapi. It has served various purposes, including a military hospital or barracks. Today, Sabbionara Bastion provides a tranquil escape with scenic views.Visitors can explore the bastion's architecture, adorned with the Venetian emblem of the Lion of Saint Mark. Walking
Starting from the heart of Chania's Old Town, head towards the Venetian Harbor. Walk along the harbor promenade, enjoying the scenic views. Continue straight onto Defkalionos Street after reaching the end of the harbor. The Sabbionara Bastion will be located on your right at Defkalionos 9. The walk takes approximately 10-15 minutes.
Public Transport
If arriving from outside Old Town, take a local bus to the Old Town bus stop. From there, walk towards the Venetian Harbor and follow Defkalionos Street to reach the Sabbionara Bastion. Bus tickets cost approximately €1.20 and can be purchased from the bus driver.
