Discover more about Kalamata's Castle

Kalamata's Castle, perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Nedontas River, is a journey through time. Originally built by the Byzantines, the castle's current structure largely dates back to the 13th century, constructed by the Frankish Crusaders of the Principality of Achaea. This strategic location has been prized since before the Trojan War. Over the centuries, the castle has seen many rulers, including Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its fortifications. The Venetians, during their occupation from 1685 to 1715, rebuilt the gate on the eastern side, marked by the Lion of Saint Mark. The castle suffered significant damage in 1685 when the Venetians sacked it, and again in 1825 during the Greek War of Independence. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, including remnants of the fortifications, a section of the defensive tower, and possible church ruins. A small theatre, built in 1950 on the southern end, hosts cultural events during the summer. Although the castle sustained damage from a 1986 earthquake, visitors can still walk around the perimeter and enjoy the breathtaking views of Kalamata. The castle provides a window into the region’s complex history and offers stunning panoramic views.
