Discover more about Taygetus

Mount Taygetus, or Taygetos, is a dominant mountain range in the southern Peloponnese of Greece, stretching for approximately 100 km. Its highest peak, Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elias), reaches 2,405 meters (7,890 feet) and is a popular destination for hikers. The mountain's name has ancient roots, appearing in Homer's Odyssey and linked to the nymph Taygete in Greek mythology. Taygetus has played a significant role throughout history. In ancient times, it served as a natural defense for Sparta, and according to some accounts, was a site where the Spartans left unwanted newborns. During the Byzantine era, it was known as Pentadaktylos (Five-Fingered) due to its five prominent peaks. The slopes provided shelter for the local population during barbarian invasions, and many villages date back to this period. Today, Mount Taygetus is a hiker's paradise, offering a variety of trails for all skill levels. The most common ascent to the summit begins from villages near Sparta. The E4 European long-distance path also crosses the region, providing trekkers the opportunity to explore the mountain's diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes. Reaching the summit of Profitis Ilias is a rewarding experience, offering breathtaking views of the Evrotas Valley, the Parnon range, Kalamata, and the Messenian Gulf. Under specific weather conditions during sunrise, a pyramid-shaped shadow is cast over the Messinian Gulf, creating a remarkable natural phenomenon.
