This prominent hill has been continuously inhabited since the early days of the city, serving as its fortress and housing its most important temples.Archaeological excavations have unearthed fascinating finds, including an early Christian basilica dedicated to Saint Achillios, a bath from the early Byzantine period, and remnants of the walls erected during the reign of Justinian I. During Ottoman rule, the area was known as 'tranos mahalas' and was the sole Greek Christian neighborhood in the city. The Ottomans also constructed a covered market, Bezesteni, which later became a fortress, giving the area its current name.Today, Πλατεία Φρουρίου is a vibrant public space where visitors can explore the visible ruins and enjoy panoramic views of Larissa. It's a place where the echoes of ancient Greece, the Byzantine Empire, and Ottoman rule converge, offering a unique perspective on the city's rich cultural heritage.
