Discover more about Mykonos Castle

Mykonos Castle, also known as Kastro, stands as a reminder of the island's long history. Constructed in the 13th century, the castle offered strategic views of the Aegean Sea. The castle was initially built by the Ghisi family, a noble Venetian family that controlled the island, to protect the island from pirates. Today, little remains of the original structure, but the area is still a worthwhile visit. Visitors can explore the narrow, whitewashed alleys and enjoy the views. The most iconic feature within the Kastro area is the Panagia Paraportiani church, a complex of five churches built over centuries. Its name, meaning "standing next to the door," reflects its location next to the castle gate. While exploring the Kastro neighborhood, visitors can also find local shops, cafes and restaurants. The Mykonos Folklore Museum is also nearby. The castle's location on a hill makes it a great spot to watch the sunset over the Aegean Sea.
