Discover more about Church of Panagia Paraportiani

Panagia Paraportiani, meaning 'Our Lady of the Side Gate,' is one of the most photographed and recognizable churches in Mykonos, Greece. Located in the Kastro neighborhood of Mykonos Town, its name comes from its proximity to the side gate of a medieval castle that once stood there. This architectural marvel is not a single church but a complex of five churches built gradually over centuries. Construction began in the 15th century and was completed in the 17th century. The complex comprises four chapels at ground level: Agios Efstathios (the central church), Agios Anargyros (the oldest), Agios Sozon, and Agia Anastasia. The fifth church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, sits atop these, distinguished by its prominent dome. The church's design showcases a blend of Byzantine, Cycladic, vernacular, and Western architectural styles. Its whitewashed walls, smooth-edged corners, and minimal exterior decorations are characteristic of Cycladic architecture. The absence of external ornamentation and its unusual shape contribute to its iconic status. While the church is often closed to the public, its exterior remains a primary attraction, drawing tourists, photographers, and architecture enthusiasts. Panagia Paraportiani stands as a testament to Mykonos's rich history and cultural heritage and is designated a national monument.
