Discover more about Terrace of the lions

The Terrace of the Lions, located on the island of Delos, is a striking testament to ancient Greek artistry and the island's historical significance as a religious and commercial hub. Erected around 600 BC by the people of Naxos, the terrace was dedicated to Apollo, the Greek god of light, music, and healing. The imposing marble lions were positioned as guardians of the Sacred Lake and the Sanctuary of Apollo, meant to inspire awe and reverence in visitors approaching the sacred site. Originally, the terrace featured nine to twelve squatting, snarling marble lions. These sculptures created a monumental avenue reminiscent of the sphinxes found in ancient Egypt. Over time, however, the elements and looting took their toll. Today, only seven of the original lions remain. To preserve these historical treasures, the surviving original lions have been moved to the Archaeological Museum of Delos, where they are protected from further deterioration. In their place on the terrace, cast replicas stand, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of the original monument. Delos itself is a small island in the Cyclades archipelago, near Mykonos. According to Greek mythology, it was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, making it a sacred site for centuries. The island's importance grew over time, becoming a major religious center and a bustling commercial port. In 166 BC, the Romans declared Delos a free port, further boosting its economic and political influence. Today, Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Terrace of the Lions remains one of its most iconic and photographed landmarks.
