Discover more about Windmills of Mykonos

The windmills of Mykonos are among the most recognizable landmarks in Greece, standing proudly on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. These iconic structures, primarily constructed by the Venetians between the 16th and 19th centuries, served a crucial purpose in the island's economy by milling wheat and barley into flour. Mykonos, known as the 'island of the winds,' provided the ideal conditions for these mills to thrive, with most facing north to capture the strong Meltemi winds. During their peak, over 20 windmills dotted the Mykonian landscape, serving as hubs for social and economic activity. Farmers would gather to grind their grain, exchange news, and strengthen community bonds. The flour produced was either sold to local bakeries, returned to the farmers, or shipped to other regions. The use of windmills gradually declined in the mid-20th century as grain production became less central to the island's economy. Today, 16 windmills remain, with seven located on the landmark hill in Chora (Mykonos Town), offering breathtaking views of Little Venice and the harbor. Their whitewashed walls, wooden roofs, and distinctive sails create a picturesque scene, especially at sunset. While most are no longer operational, some have been renovated and transformed into museums, such as the Bonis Windmill, which showcases the history of the windmills and agriculture on Mykonos. Exploring the windmills provides a captivating glimpse into the island's past and a chance to appreciate the ingenuity of traditional Cycladic architecture.
